Bus Driver Training

School bus drivers must possess a Class 2 license with S designation. You may be interested in visiting our contractor's site at http://www.southland.ab.ca.

General Safety

Bus Loops

Please do drive into or through the school bus loops when picking up or dropping off children while the buses are operating. Not only does this interfere with bus traffic, but also poses a serious hazard to children, who may walk between the lined up buses and in front of your vehicle.

When a School Bus is Stopped

If a school bus is stopped with red lights flashing and the driver's side stop sign extended, YOU MUST NOT PASS FROM EITHER DIRECTION. Children may exit the bus and cross the roadway under the direction of the bus driver. Did you know that the fine for passing a school bus with flashing red lights is $402 and 6 demerits?

Permitted items.

Certain items are not permitted on school buses for safety reasons. A full list is available on our Frequently Asked Questions page.

Student Responsibilities for Safety

The driver is in full charge of the bus at all times, and students must obey their instructions or directives promptly.

Students must stand well back at their designated pickup until the bus has come to a complete stop before loading. Students must not stand or attempt to get on/off the bus while it is in motion.

Watch your step and use the handrail when getting on and off the bus.

Students shall not extend any part of their body out the window.

Students shall not leave their seats while the bus is in motion. All students are to remain in their assigned seats.

Conduct which may divert the driver's attention, thus endangering the safe operation of the bus, is prohibited.

Upon discharging, if you live on the opposite side of the road, cross only in front of the bus and at least fifteen feet ahead. Cross only when safe to do so and under the guidance of the driver.

Parent Responsiblities for Safety

Be certain that your children are at the bus stop on time and are on the pick-up side of the road when the bus stops. Students who are frequently late may be left behind.

Provide the necessary protection for your children when going to and from the bus stop.

Accept responsibility for the proper conduct of you children prior to boarding a bus, during the daily trips and upon discharge.

Make certain that your children are properly dressed in case of emergencies during cold and wet weather.

Parents will be responsible for any damage to a bus by their children.

Encourage children to obey all the traffic rules and school bus regulations.

Make reasonable effort to understand and cooperate with those responsible for pupil transportation.

All bus changes must go through the Transportation Department and not the bus driver. You may contact the Transportation Officer at 403-938-2659 or 1-800-737-9383.
