St. John the Apostle Award Winners
The St. John the Apostle Award Winners 2024
With the namesake of St. John the Apostle, the “beloved disciple” and the only one of 12 to survive into old age, this award will be granted to a long-term administrator and/or a long-term teacher, coordinator or uncertificated staff member of CTR Catholic who has retired. Throughout the recipient’s career, the work that he/she has done will be characterized by excellence resulting in significant, lasting, and inspirational contributions to the life of the Division.
#1 - Josephine Appleby
For nearly two dozen years, Josephine (Jo) put her heart and soul into the service of Christ The Redeemer families through her roles with Central Office, Okotoks Homeschooling, and the Centre for Learning@HOME. However, it is through her work with the Centre for Learning@Home that she earned herself the status of "legend" through her advocacy and dedication to the home-schooling community.
One of the greatest impacts of Jo's time with CTR has been her contributions to improvements in program offerings and service standards. Through her roles of Registrar and Family Service Coordinator, she possessed significant insight and depth of knowledge of families and their needs. Many families chose to register with the CFL due to this personal interaction that Jo provided during their Initial phone calls. Despite the geographical challenges of families, students, and even new staff, Jo was able to form strong relationships because she cared, listened, and provided unparallel service to our families. Many moms would call Jo, not just about a program question, but about their new babies, struggles at home, or for a shoulder to cry on. She has been the definition of passion, care, and service. Her heart has always been centered in her faith and she has been an incredible witness of joy and hope for all she has served, through her industrious work ethic, resolute faith, and a heart that warms all. Her mantra has always been, "service, service, service!"
In the office, Jo’s humour, laughter, and treats often brightened everyone's day. Jo's witness strengthened others in faith, as she often led prayers at the start of meetings and gathered colleagues in a decade of the rosary. It is evident that knowing Jo Appleby and working with her at the CFL was an honour. She personifies service, joy, love, loyalty, and friendship. She is truly deserving of this prestigious award.
#2 - Dr. Scott Morrison
Dr. Morrison (Scott) recently retired from Christ the Redeemer Catholic schools in June, after acting as a servant leader within the division for many decades. During his time as a teacher, principal, and superintendent, Scott consistently embodied the principles of Catholicity, setting a commendable example and role model for others within the organization. Scott stands as a paragon of virtue and dedication, consistently demonstrating qualities that inspire and uplift those around them. Scott exhibited wise and faithful stewardship in his responsibilities, demonstrating a keen understanding of the importance of managing resources, time, and talents with diligence and care. He served as a Christ-like model for others, embodying compassion, humility, and selflessness.
The cornerstone of Scott's character is unquestionable integrity. He operates with honesty, transparency, and a strong moral compass, earning the trust and respect of all those they encounter. Scott has a remarkable ability to create an invitational and welcoming atmosphere, ensuring that everyone feels valued and included, and fostering a sense of community and belonging.
Scott has left an indelible mark on the life of CTR Catholic and Catholic education. Even in retirement, Scott remains a trailblazer, assuming a provincial leadership role through his impactful work with College of Catholic School Superintendents of Alberta. His ongoing leadership stands as a testament to the principles and values that underpin Catholic education provincially. He previously led the province through his role as CASS president, and continues to contribute to the greater educational community through his work with St. Mary’s University and the University of Calgary.
Scott is an exemplary individual whose life and service align seamlessly with the criteria for this award. His unwavering commitment to the principles of wisdom, faithfulness, integrity, and service makes him a very deserving candidate for this prestigious recognition.
