The primary goal for the department of Student Services is to ensure that our schools are supported in identifying and delivering appropriate and effective programming for students with additional needs. The team consists of a Director, Coordinators, Registered Psychologists, Speech-Language Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and Administrative Assistants.
Our team supports all diverse programming in schools which includes areas such as early identification of special needs through Kindergarten screenings, specialized assessments by various professionals, English Language Learning supports, coordination of additional services, development of various support plans for students, and implementation of effective strategies. We strive to maintain our school division’s motto of “leave not one heart behind” by ensuring that our students have the resources and support required to best achieve their potential.
Each school has a Learning Support Teacher that facilitates specialized programming for students. Additionally, most schools have an English Language Learning Teacher who works collaboratively to support English language acquisition for these students. Our schools strive to provide specialized support at specific times for those students who require it. Each school also has a Family School Liaison Worker who supports social/emotional needs. While our schools have many similarities in the programming they offer, they also have unique approaches to meeting the needs of their diverse students. Christ the Redeemer also has an innovative “Connections Program” at several schools throughout the division. In these schools, the Connections Workers work alongside the school, parents and students to support school engagement and participation.
Student Services also works alongside other departments and initiatives to help provide all students with the knowledge and skills they need to fulfill the plan God has for each of their lives.
The Connections Program is available in some CTR schools. This program provides support for students who are disconnected from school, truant, at risk for dropping out and/or who are engaging in behaviours that would traditionally lead to out-of-school suspensions or expulsion. The program is based on CTR’s philosophy of “leave not one heart behind” and supports the belief that children are more successful when they have healthy connections to home, school, and community.
Family School Liaison Program
The Family School Liaison Program is a free, confidential, school-based service that provides support to students who are experiencing social, emotional or behavioural difficulties that are impacting school functioning. The primary role of the Family School Liaison Worker is to enhance student coping through the provision of individual supportive counselling, targeted skills groups, classroom presentations, universal prevention programs and community referrals.
