Fair Notice

The Christ the Redeemer Catholic School Division is committed to providing safe and caring learning environments for all students, staff, school visitors, and community members. To this end, we have invested significantly in Dewey Cornell's Comprehensive School Threat Assessment Guidelines (CSTAG). CSTAG offers a structured, evidence-based approach to identifying, assessing, and responding to potential threats in a timely and effective manner.

Safety Assessment and Threat Assessment Teams

When threat-making behaviors occur, schools initiate a process called Safety Assessment. Each school has a multidisciplinary threat assessment team, which includes the Director of Student Services and an administrator. Depending on the situation, the team may also include a psychologist, the RCMP, Child and Family Services representatives, and Community Mental Health therapists.

What Is a Threat?

A threat is an expression of intent to cause harm or act violently against someone or something. Threats can be verbal, written, drawn, posted online, or conveyed through gestures. Threat-making behaviours include, but are not limited to:

  • Serious acts of violence
  • Fire setting
  • Threats to kill
  • Bomb threats
  • Possession of weapons (or replicas)

If your child comes home and reports any threat-making behaviours, please notify the school administration immediately.

The Threat Assessment Process

When schools learn of threat-making behaviors, they activate the CSTAG Threat Assessment Protocol. Once initiated, interviews may be conducted with the student(s) involved, including the threat maker and with parents and staff to determine the level of risk and develop an appropriate response. The threat assessment team will then create intervention and support plans to share with the student's parents who made the threats.

We are proud to provide this level of support to our school communities. We are grateful for the collaboration of our community partners in maintaining a safe and caring learning environment.
