English Language Learning

Each school in our division welcomes and offers support for English Language Learners (ELLs).  Depending upon student needs and numbers, our schools offer a variety of supports in English as a Second Language (ESL) programming while ensuring that each child develops a sense of belonging within the school community. When ELL students arrive, families are welcomed with an Intake Assessment which includes a gathering of background information as well as a series of assessments that allow our schools to determine the student’s English Language Proficiency Level within the Alberta Education ESL Benchmarks. Based on this initial assessment, a program is created and implemented to support the student’s further development of English Language Proficiency.

We strive to provide an inclusive learning environment for all students, and each school offers a range of programming options which may include small group pull-out, in-class supports, or courses designed specifically for English language learners.  These supports are intended to help students achieve academic success in all subject areas as they learn the English Language.
